Still Winter

‘Heartwood’, 2010. Exhibition

Perthshire Open Studios

Fragile porcelain butterflies hang on branches of a rowan grove. The sculpture installation Still Winter reflects the prolonged winter conditions that affected much of Scotland in Spring 2010.

Christie used a smoke-fired process to create the dappled surface of the butterflies. The unpredictability of the slow smoking process, which oxidizes the surface of the delicate paper porcelain, mirrors the dynamic flux in our natural environment as we experience more irregular climate conditions.
